On April 26, 2025, Northern Lights Drone Shows helped transform a major Bear Country Inc. (BCI) grand opening into something far more meaningful: a breathtaking tribute to legacy, innovation, and family. Staged outside Bear Paw Adventure Park in Caledonia, this 650-drone spectacular, titled A Dreamer’s Journey, celebrated the opening of the new Thrill Hill attraction while honoring the late BCI founder Randy Isaacson, whose vision helped shape the company’s growth.

This was not just another entertainment segment. It was a deeply customized aerial story, one designed to welcome guests, spotlight BCI’s expanding attractions, and create an emotional memorial experience for Randy’s family and loved ones.

Mission

BCI’s goal was twofold. First, the company wanted to celebrate the grand opening of its newest attraction, Randy’s Thrill Hill, with a signature event that would drive excitement and attendance. Second, it wanted to honor Randy Isaacson, who had passed away the year before, in a way that felt personal, memorable, and worthy of his legacy.

Northern Lights Drone Shows was a natural fit for that assignment. As a relatively fresh business with the drone fleet capacity to create something ambitious and highly visual, our team offered BCI a distinctive alternative to a standard fireworks-only show. The result was an immersive memorial and brand-storytelling experience that fireworks alone simply could not deliver.

Design

The show was built as a visual journey through the BCI world. Under the title A Dreamer’s Journey, the storyline showcased the innovation that drove Randy Isaacson’s vision, while helping audience members, whether they knew him personally or not, understand his impact on the company.

Using 650 drones, the sky came alive with custom imagery tied directly to BCI’s brands and attractions, including:

  • The BCI logo

  • Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park™

  • A tractor pulling a picnic basket that transformed into a sleigh for the Christmas Carnival of Lights

  • Bear Paw Adventure Park, including the signature Adventure Island water features

  • A 3D depiction of laser tag

  • Bear Paw ropes course

  • Arrow formations pointing guests toward the newly opened Randy’s Thrill Hill

  • A projected flat portrait of Randy Isaacson

The final image was especially powerful: a drone-rendered portrait of Randy accompanied by the words “in memory of Randy Isaacson.” For many in attendance, it was the emotional centerpiece of the night, a moment that put a face to the story and made the tribute unmistakably personal.

Execution

The 14-minute, 10-second production combined drones, music, narration, and live fireworks into one synchronized show experience. The soundtrack included some of Randy’s favorite oldies along with Katy Perry’s “Firework,” timed to the pyrotechnics for added emotional lift and spectacle.

Narration gave the visuals added depth. Audio clips of Randy speaking about innovation at BCI were woven together with recorded reflections from his daughters, creating a moving through-line between the company’s past, present, and future. That combination helped the show resonate not only with family members, but also with general guests and campers who may not have known Randy personally.

The audience response confirmed that the storytelling worked. There was significant cheering throughout the show, especially as the scale of the 650-drone display became clear. Afterward, Randy’s relatives and family members personally thanked the team, sharing how deeply the experience had moved them.

Challenges

This show also required some of the most careful planning of the season. The drones were flown directly over a newly constructed attraction, Randy’s Thrill Hill, which did not yet have modern 3D topographical data or updated satellite imagery available for design use. That meant the team had to create a safe and reliable flight plan with incomplete environmental data.

Additional site hazards increased the complexity:

  • Late-discovered power lines in the flight area

  • Live fireworks cannons operating during the drone show

  • The need to maintain safe clearance from the newly built slide hill

  • Strict safety compliance across multiple moving production elements

Rather than treating these obstacles as limitations, our team adapted quickly and methodically. The lead designer visited slide hill in person to estimate its size and elevation profile. Using 2D satellite imagery, grid measurements, software rulers, and a provided map of fireworks cannon placements, the team successfully blocked out hazard zones and built a safe operating plan around them.

The result was a show that remained visually ambitious while meeting rigorous safety standards. Every drone trajectory had to be closely monitored to avoid the unmapped attraction, steer clear of power infrastructure, and maintain safe distances from pyrotechnic launch areas.

Impact

The show achieved exactly what BCI hoped it would do: turn a grand opening into a destination event and elevate a memorial into a shared community experience.

Key outcomes included:

Just as importantly, the format gave BCI a storytelling canvas unlike anything available through traditional fireworks alone. The drones could dynamically display Randy’s likeness, branded destinations, attraction icons, and directional imagery while narration provided context in real time. That level of customization made the show both intimate and monumental.

Brand Connection

For BCI, this event was more than a one-night celebration. It reinforced the company’s identity as an innovative, guest-focused brand willing to create memorable experiences at scale.

That connection is especially meaningful in a regional setting like Caledonia, where destination entertainment, campground experiences, and family attractions are central to how guests interact with the brand. Northern Lights Drone Shows helped tie those experiences together in one sky-high narrative, linking Jellystone Park™ Caledonia, Christmas Carnival of Lights, and Bear Paw Adventure Park into a single, cohesive story.

BCI already has experience with smaller drone activations and regularly performs 50-drone shows at Bear Paw Adventure Park. But this project demonstrated what is possible when a brand chooses to go bigger, bolder, and more emotionally intentional. In fact, BCI now plans to make drone-and-fireworks grand opening shows a recurring annual tradition, with future editions likely taking on more lighthearted themes while continuing to build on this format.

The team also hopes to integrate drone choreography and fireworks scripting even more tightly in future productions, an exciting next step for a partnership that has already proven its potential.
