Ho-Chunk Casino Black River Falls

Northern Lights Drone Shows - June 12, 2026

Black River Falls, WI

To celebrate 30 years of Ho-Chunk Gaming Black River Falls, Northern Lights Drone Shows transformed the night sky above the casino itself into a vibrant anniversary story—one that honored the property’s past, showcased its present, and hinted at its future. With 300 drones flying in precise formation over the two-story building, this private event delivered a nostalgic, high-energy visual experience that resonated strongly with staff, patrons, and the wider Ho-Chunk community.

Mission

The goal was clear from the beginning: create a custom visual celebration worthy of Ho-Chunk Gaming Black River Falls’ 30th anniversary while bringing staff and the community together around a shared sense of pride. The client wanted more than a generic spectacle—they wanted a medium capable of displaying specific branded imagery, tracing the property’s journey from its early days as Majestic Pines to its current status as a major regional destination.

That clarity made a difference. Because the client came in with a strong vision, our design team was able to build a cohesive story quickly and efficiently, without losing momentum in rounds of vague concepts. The result was a tightly focused show with a celebratory tone, a nostalgic emotional arc, and several “wow” moments built around recognizable casino imagery.

Design

The show followed a loose chronological timeline of the casino’s 30-year evolution. Set to music—beginning with 1990s tracks to reflect the founding era in 1996 and progressing into more modern selections, including “High Hopes” by Panic! at the Disco—the performance moved from remembrance to celebration.

The visual sequence opened with celebration confetti, a festive skyborne kickoff that immediately signaled the importance of the occasion. From there, the drones formed a Wisconsin state outline, with a wave effect applied to the founding year, grounding the story in both place and history.

Next came a series of casino-inspired animations designed to feel iconic and instantly recognizable. Bingo balls transformed one by one into the letters B-I-N-G-O, creating a playful and highly legible moment in the sky. A blackjack sequence followed, animated so the card fills transitioned directly into the cards themselves—an elegant creative solution that allowed the action to read clearly within the 300-drone limit.

The momentum continued with spinning slot machine symbols, where synchronized motion and lighting effects combined to create the illusion of rapid spinning. Later, an eagle morphed into a Ho-Chunk feather, which then transitioned into the property’s 30-year anniversary logo, connecting the visual spectacle to Ho-Chunk identity and brand pride in a memorable way.

The finale expanded outward from the individual property to the broader organization. A regional map displayed a heart at Black River Falls, highlighted additional Ho-Chunk locations, and included a blinking dot teasing the new Beloit, Wisconsin location currently under construction. The show concluded with a simple but heartfelt “thank you” message directed to both staff and patrons.

Execution

This was a one-night performance, launched at approximately 10:00 p.m., with spectators gathered in the parking lot while the drones flew directly above the casino building. Unlike many shows staged over open fields, this production required close coordination between creative design, operations, and safety planning.

Flying over the building itself made the setting feel more immersive and site-specific. Instead of treating the venue as a backdrop, the show used the physical location as part of the experience, making the anniversary celebration feel rooted in the exact place where the casino’s story has unfolded over the past three decades.

There was no narration, which allowed the visuals and music to do all the storytelling. That choice fit the event well, giving the show a polished, cinematic flow while keeping it accessible for a mixed audience of staff and patrons.

Challenges & Adaptations

One of the most significant creative challenges was figuring out how to depict casino games clearly and dynamically with a 300-drone cap. Early in the process, the design plan included familiar gaming symbols like poker and roulette. However, the team discovered the casino unexpectedly did not feature those staple games, requiring a fast creative pivot.

Rather than forcing imagery that didn’t reflect the venue, the team adapted the concept to better match the client’s reality:

  • Poker was replaced with blackjack

  • Roulette was replaced with a slot machine spinner

  • Card-fill transitions were used to accelerate the blackjack animation without requiring additional drones

  • Motion and lighting effects were combined to create a convincing slot-machine spin illusion

This pivot ultimately strengthened the show. The updated imagery felt more authentic to the property and helped the sky story connect more naturally with the audience on the ground.

The venue itself also introduced a technical challenge. Because the show was flown directly over the renovated two-story casino building, and up-to-date satellite data of the structure was not available, the designer had to build around a 3D cube model estimate of the building’s dimensions. That modeling process ensured the formations would be visible from the parking lot while maintaining proper spatial awareness around the structure.

Safety remained central throughout planning and execution. The team carefully designed the flight area so the safety zone stayed out of the parking lot, ensuring drones never flew over the crowd. Standard drone show height regulations are generally capped at 400 feet, though building height can sometimes factor into the allowable maximum depending on airport proximity and airspace conditions. In this case, careful planning made it possible to execute the show safely and cleanly above the building itself.

Impact

Although there was no official livestream or professional event recording, the show generated strong positive reaction from those who experienced it in person. The lead designer saw enthusiastic attendee comments and posted videos on Facebook, clear signs that the performance landed well with the live audience.

More importantly, the show achieved its strategic purpose. It celebrated the 30th anniversary of Black River Falls in a way that felt specific, emotional, and unmistakably Ho-Chunk. It brought together staff and patrons, highlighted the property’s growth, and created a shared moment of recognition around the casino’s history and future.

The event also served as an important internal proof point. By all accounts, it functioned as a highly successful test run for the broader Ho-Chunk organization, and other regional locations are now considering their own drone shows with Northern Lights Drone Shows.

Regional and Brand Connection

What made this show especially powerful was its regional relevance. It was not a generic anniversary display dropped into the sky—it was a Wisconsin story, a Black River Falls story, and a Ho-Chunk story.

From the Wisconsin outline to the Black River Falls location heart marker to the forward-looking Beloit teaser, every major visual tied back to place, identity, and growth. The transition from eagle to feather to anniversary logo gave the show a branded and culturally resonant core, while the timeline from Majestic Pines to today reinforced just how far the property has come over 30 years.

This is where drone shows offer something truly distinctive. Unlike fireworks, which can certainly excite a crowd but cannot tell a specific story, drone light shows can animate custom brand imagery, recognizable historical references, and highly tailored transitions. For Ho-Chunk Gaming, that meant the sky itself became a storytelling canvas.

Why It Worked

Several factors made this anniversary drone show especially effective:

  • Clear client direction enabled a faster, more cohesive design process

  • Custom imagery made the show feel personal and brand-specific

  • Music-driven chronology supported the property’s 30-year timeline

  • Venue-integrated execution created a more immersive audience experience

  • Creative adaptation ensured the casino game visuals remained authentic to the property

  • Strong audience response confirmed the show’s emotional and entertainment value

For Northern Lights Drone Shows, the event also reinforced a key strength: the ability to solve creative and technical challenges without losing the magic of the final experience.
